Uzbek Research Institute of Plant Industry was organized under leadership the N.I.Vavilov in 1924 and nowadays it is of the greatest scientific institution in Central Asia, where genepool of agricultural plants is concentrated. World collections of the Institute number about 50 thousand of accessions more than 100 agricultural crops. This rich genetic pool of plants is used for development of high-qualitative cultivars and will serve as a base for production of food for future generations.

STAGES OF DEVELOPMENT

1924 - Organization of Department of Institute of Applied Botany, Genetics and Breeding.
1927 - Transformation to Middle Asian Experimental Station of N.I.Vavilov All-Union Research Institute of Plant Industry (VIR).
1979 - Transformation to Middle Asian Branch of VIR.
1991 - Renaming to Uzbek Research Institute of Plant Industry (UzRIPI).
1992 - Organization of Andijan Experimental Station of the Institute.
1994 - Organization of Surkhandarya Experimental Station of the Institute.
2000 - Organization of Plant Genetic Resources Documentation Unit.
2003 - Organization of UzRIPI Genebank for medium term conservation of plant genetic resources.

THE MAIN DIRECTIONS OF ACTIVITY

  • Collection and introduction of agricultural plants genetic resources.
  • Quarantine control of introduced material.
  • Conservation of plant genepool.
  • Complex evaluation and transmission of sources and donors of valuable features to breeding institutions.
  • Introduction into production of untraditional for the region crops.

COLLECTING AND INTRODUCTION

Yearly investigation of Central Asian territory for replenishment of plant genepool is carried out by Middle Asian Expedition, which was created in 1965. Joint expeditions with participation of foreign specialists are carried out as well. World collections of the Institute have been replenished with update cultivars and hybrids, and also wild relatives local and varietial populations of cultivated plants. Exchange of germplasm is carried out with scientific institutions and leading genepools of the world.

QUARANTINE CONTROL

To prevent penetration of quarantine objects into this country phytopathologic and entomological control initial study of main valuable features of 1,0-1,5 tho of introduced accessions on different agricultural crops is carried out yearly. Controlled material is given to laboratories of plant resources of the Institute for subsequent work.

CONSERVATION

World collections of the Institute number grain crops- 21969, industrial crops- 11068, fodder crops- 649, fruit crops- 3906, vegetable crops- 5755 accessions. For conservation of genetic integrity of genepool for modern and future breeding renovation of reproduction is carried out by method of seed re-sowing in a stage manner. Accessions of vegetative reproduced crops are kept as alive. Investigations on working out of methods of long storage of plant germplasm are carried out.

RESEARCH

Study of morphologic and biologic features of accessions in different agricultural crops, their evaluation on physiologic, biochemical indices and technologic properties are carries out. As a result of complex study separated sources and donors of evaluable features are given to breeding institutions for development of new cultivars.

DOCUMENTATION

Documentation is one of the main directions in the sphere of activities on plant genetic resources where it includes their design, transfer conservation and use. Plant genetic resources documentation is a base of functioning of plant genebank, because it is the most important element of this process- forming of genetic diversity of national collection. General activity of Plant Genetic Resources Documentation Unit is development of National Information System on Plant Genetic Resources.

UTILIZATION

More than 200 cultivars of grain, vegetable, fruit and other crops were developed in different years in this country on the base of the collection. Nowadays more than 50 cultivars wide cultivated in the republic. They were separated and developed by selective method. Initial and elite seed growing of different crops is carried out; seedlings of fruit crops and vine are grown for supply of farms. Works on introduction of untraditional crops are carried out for their utilization in national economy. Results of investigations on plant genepool are reflected in Transactions, monographs, catalogues, reference books, candidate and doctor dissertations and are used for working out of methodic handbooks.

COLLABORATION

There are connections with scientists of foreign countries on different directions of investigations. Collaboration with leading genepools of plant resources is carried out: VIR, Bioversiry International (IPGRI), ICARDA, ICRISAT, CIMMYT, NIAB, AVRDC, ICBA.
